From Vulnerability to Visibility: Strengthening Cybersecurity and Observability of Medical Devices
v/ Veronica Schmitt, Assistant Professor/Security Researcher, Noroff University & Glenn Haarseide, Sr. Systems Engineer, Palo Alto Networks

The rapid digitization of healthcare has led to increased reliance on medical devices in hospitals, bringing with it new challenges and vulnerabilities in terms of cybersecurity. Ensuring the security and observability of medical devices is crucial for protecting patient safety and safeguarding sensitive data.

This talk aims to explore the journey from vulnerability to visibility in the context of hospital medical devices. It will delve into the key cybersecurity threats faced by medical devices, including potential breaches, unauthorized access, and data manipulation, and discuss the importance of enhancing observability to detect and mitigate such risks effectively. The talk will also highlight strategies and technologies for strengthening cybersecurity, such as robust real-time monitoring systems, which provide increased visibility into the device landscape. By embracing these measures, hospitals can strengthen their cybersecurity posture and ensure the integrity, availability, and confidentiality of medical devices, ultimately promoting patient safety and trust in the healthcare ecosystem. This talk features insights from Palo Alto Networks in terms of the importance of observability.
